I was looking for opinions on the current design/build of the Tretorn Nylite. I believe they were updated in 2017 and not much has changed since.

I think the current design and build is as close to the 1980's version as I've seen. The 1980's version may have been more cushioned with a more flexible sole but I think it was more of a basic foam that would break down quicker whereas the current model has a more updated ortholite footbed. That's nothing more than updated technology.

From my vantage point, the Nylites disappeared for a few years in the early 2000's and when I saw them again, the newer model was far inferior. Less cushion, the canvas was an off-white and cheap looking, and the stripe was more narrow. Overall a shadow of the original.

The 2017 re-vamp was a vast improvement and I'm glad they haven't tinkered with it.

Thoughts? What, if anything, would you change to the current model?

I haven’t seen any in stores or in the wild for a long time. Always been a favourite of mine. Always been gender neutral as well.

Last year, DSW was selling the Nylite Mule in store - it had a tighter fit, and the stitching toward the toe spread out instead of narrowing. - Not as stylish IMO. I also found at the same DSW a bit later some men's white canvas with a navy gullwing, but the sole was tan.

I agree the latest version of the Nylites are as close in look and comfort to the 80s ones as they've had! One thing to look out for though: I think they have been trying to branch out and have put inferior ones in stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx. They still have the great look but from reviews I've read online I don't know if they are as comfortable.

The Kohls in my area has had them on the shelves for a while, but I don't see them being worn much. I see the Rawlins version which, you may know, is a more athletic one, but I think that is because those were being sold at Costco.

Great thread!

Now that you say that, I agree with your comment about quality. I got my wife a pair of the pink madras striped Tretorns and noticed the inner lining and footbed is not as plush as some other recent pairs. No terrycloth lining and a slightly less cushioned footbed.

Yeah they still look hot, but I don't think they are as comfortable. I got my wife a black and white gingham pair from Marshalls that I haven't given her yet. They are in the closet with a ton of other ones! LOL They are definitely less quality than the "real" ones. She's picky about them and sometimes complain that they hurt her feet. She has three pair in her closet right now that she doesn't wear that often so I'm biding my time!

I have been a fan since I first saw a pair on a cute high school girl in the late 70"s. I agree that today's version is as close to the originals that I have seen. I would like to see more with some of the stripe colors from the 80's , like yellow and pink.
