Love white boat shoes. They were fairly popular when I was in college. A fair amount of crossover with the Keds and Tretorn girls.

I recall boat-style shoes from Sperry, Sporto, Polo, Brooks Brothers, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer and Keds. Some had rope-style laces which added to the look. Others had those brown (raw hide?) laces which I didn't care for but obviously some did. The main problem with them was that if they got wet, the brown bled on to the white canvas ruining them.

I was with a group of friends once where a girl was wearing a white knit top, khaki skirt, white ankle socks and the Brooks Brothers white boat shoes (with a dark blue stripe around the foxing). She was looking pretty good that day. After an afternoon out and about, we decided to go to dinner and at the same time trying to beat a fast approaching storm. We had to park in the overflow lot and walk a few hundred yards to the restaurant. We quickly exited the car and started walking quickly - almost jogging - as the first drops came from the sky. We were picking up our pace even more when the sky emptied. By the time we ran through the unpaved parking lot and got into the vestibule we were soaked. I turned to see Brooks Brothers girl drenched like the rest of us. I looked down to see her skirt now streaked dark brown from the rain and her white socks and sneakers were soaking wet and spattered with mud. She was not happy but handled it well as we were all in the same boat. The next time I saw her in the same sneakers, you could tell they were cleaned but not nearly as white as before.

Totally agree RonR that the brown, leather laces take away from the shoes. They also do NOT stay tied even with double knots! But in the pics above, OMFG the blonde in the pink Target tennies is AMAZING!! She is beautiful!! And I so LOVE those target sneakers, it is SUCH A SHAME they stopped carrying them as they are OMG sexy!

Why are Vans so popular when the Sperry is a much better sneaker? I remember the 90's the CVO's in multi colours were everywhere.

Marketing. Sperry seemed to target the boating crowd. While Vans were aimed, at skate boarders and bmx bike riders.

True. The Sperry's have the cut soles that are great with water.

Vans has the youthful market and Sperry has the more "mature" (as in adult/old) market. And they don't seem to want to extend their reach. I have some Sperry, but have to admit, Vans are more comfortable
