Re: Do any of you guys wear women's sneakers in public?
Keds as men's shoes have been on and off again. Up until the 1960's, men's sneakers were basketball shoes (AKA - converse and yes, Keds had their version for boys.) and women and girls wore Keds only or Keds knock off.
In the early 1960's there were "low quarter" basketball shoes for men. No girl would ever wear them unless she wanted to get laughed at. Also various manufacturers started making oxford-like sneakers for men that vaguely resembled Keds.
Then came the 1970's and the running craze. All of a sudden sneakers were no longer cheap, summer footwear, but were now "designer" and "stylish" and 5 times the price of what they used to be. Keds sales plummeted.
There was a resurgence in the 1980's with the "preppy" look and at this point Keds also started making men's versions. They looked almost identical to the women's version but there were some slight differences. The movie, "Dirty Dancing" put Keds back over the top with girls for a while - not because of the female star, but because the male star went for the girl who wore Keds.
If there is to be a modern-day resurgence in classic Keds, it would be sparked by whoever the current teen heart-throb is going for a girl who wears Keds. Having a strong female spokesperson like Taylor Swift also helps. I think a combination of the two would steal the market.
